What are stretch marks?
Stretch marks, or striae, are bands of parallel lines that show up on your skin in a different color and texture than your normal skin. They can vary significantly in color, from red and pink to brown or gray, and they can show up on a number of different places on your body, including your:
When they first appear, they’re sometimes slightly raised off of the skin and can feel itchy. Stretch marks are not medically harmful and are only ever a problem cosmetically.
What causes stretch marks?
Stretch marks happen when your body grows more quickly than your skin can stretch. The abrupt change in your body’s mass can cause ruptures in your skin’s collagen and elastin, and as the skin heals, a scar develops.
Stretch marks most commonly develop during:
- growth spurts, especially during puberty
- pregnancy, especially in the third trimester
- rapid weight loss or gain
- rapid muscle growth, from weight training, for example
- breast implant surgery
Not everyone gets stretch marks, and for those who do, it seems to run in families. Fluctuating hormone levels, particularly your level of cortisone, are also thought to play a role for those who do get them. For this reason, certain genetic disorders that increase the amount of cortisone in your body — such as Marfan’s syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and Cushing’s syndrome — can cause stretch marks.
How can I get rid of my stretch marks?
Stretch marks, like any other scars, are often permanent. There are a number treatments, however, that can significantly reduce their appearance and make them itch less, such as:
Any one or a combination of microdermabrasion, chemical peel, laser therapy, radio frequency, or ultrasound have been shown to be effective at reducing the appearance of stretch marks
Hyaluronic acid and retinol have been shown to diminish stretch marks. Tretinoin cream, which works by restoring your skin’s collagen, is also sometimes used.
