A vampire facial is a traditional microneedling procedure done with additional platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. The PRP injections encourage the production of more collagen, which tightens the skin and accelerates the healing process. It also:
The ultimate effect is skin that’s healthier, smoother, and younger looking overall.
There are two components to a vampire facial: microneedling (or microdermabrasion) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that uses a dermaroller to make multiple tiny pricks across the surface of your skin. Your skin interprets these pricks as an injury, and responds by producing new tissue that’s rich in collagen. Your new collagen-rich skin is healthier-looking and more even in tone and texture.
Platelet-rich plasma is a component in your blood that helps your skin produce more collagen and elastin, and enhances its hydrating and antioxidant properties. It’s derived from the platelet-containing serum portion of your blood and stimulates cell turnover when applied to the skin. Just like the microneedling, introducing platelets onto your face essentially tricks your skin into thinking that it needs to heal from an injury when there hasn’t actually been one. The “extra” healing produces fresher, rejuvenated new skin.
Since you’ll be using your own blood to source the platelet-rich plasma, a vampire facial begins with a blood draw. Dr. Foye Ikyaator then puts your blood through a centrifuge, where it’s spun at high speeds in order to separate the layers and isolate the platelet-containing plasma.
While your plasma is being isolated, Dr. Foye Ikyaator will begin your microneedling, where she’ll use a small, pen-like tool to make incredibly small pricks beneath the skin across your face. Afterward, she’ll apply the newly separated plasma across your face.
Your skin might be mildly tight, itchy, and red for a few days afterward, and it’s best to avoid sun exposure while you recover, but recovery time is typically no longer than one or two days.
